JOHN MENSAH : [THE ROCK OF GIBRALTAR] ![]() |
Mensah is a product of the enormously proficient scouting system in Ghana that identifies talented youngsters long before they enter any formal structures and exports them to potential fame and fortune in Europe.
A centre-half by choice, Mensah is also adept at left-back and has played in both positions for his national side, also captaining the team on occasions. His physique has earned him the moniker the ‘Rock of Gibraltar’, and Mensah was considered a certainty to be named in the Black Stars’ squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

| Rock Wishes Stars Well |
Mensah will not be part of the team that will be in action this Friday for the Lesotho game but has revealed that he is with them in spirit.
The Rock, who arrived home from his France base last Monday evening has been sidelined for the double header to have enough time to take care of an injury situation.
“I will pass through the team’s camp one of these days to wish them well ahead of Friday’s game. I am recovering at a very fast pace but decided to allow myself to be healed completely so I can give my best shot,” he said in an exclusive interview with this site.
“I have more than enough confidence in both the playing body and the new technical team to deliver. It’s a blend of new faces and the senior ones.
“I have been in talks with most of the players and indications are that they are bent on starting the World Cup campaign on a bright note,” Mensah said.
Sounding very optimistic, he urged the Stars to leave nothing for chance considering uncertainties that creep into the game sometimes.
“I have always maintained that there are no minnows in the game, you do that at your peril.
“I wish coach Kwasi Appiah and his charges the very best in the double header. I will pay them a surprise visit before the Kumasi game on Friday,” he added.
